Privacy policy
The short version. Unforgettable Things doesn't collect anything about you. There's no account, no server, no ads and no analytics.
Everything you add stays on your phone. It only leaves when you export a backup or send something yourself, and then it goes where you choose.
Who makes the app
Unforgettable Things is made by Giacomo Garabello, an independent developer. This policy covers the Android app and this website. "I" and "me" below means the developer.
What the app stores, and where
Everything below is kept in the app's private storage on your phone. I don't have a copy and have no way to see it.
| What | Why it's kept |
|---|---|
| Rooms, photos and pins | The names you type, the photos you add, and where each pin sits on its photo. This is the app's whole purpose. |
| Expiry dates and reminders | The dates and notes you add to pins, for the Due soon list and notifications. |
| Change history | What changed and when, so Undo works and you can see a pin's history. Kept for 90 days, and not included in backups. |
| Recently deleted | Things you deleted, kept for 2 days by default (you can change this in Settings) so you can bring them back. |
| Settings | Theme, language, how long to keep deleted things, the name you can enter under Account, and a random ID made on your phone. The name and ID label your changes in the history. |
| Error log | Up to 50 recent errors, so you can copy them if you report a problem. |
Photos
You add photos with your camera or from your gallery. The app only gets the photos you pick and never browses the rest of your gallery.
Before a photo is saved, the app removes its metadata (EXIF, XMP and IPTC), which can include the GPS location, the camera model and the time it was taken. Only the orientation is kept, so the photo shows the right way up. Photos are also resized to at most 1600 pixels on the longest side to save space.
Permissions
- Notifications. Asked the first time you add a date to a pin, so the app can notify you at 9:00 on that day. Notifications are scheduled on your phone, not sent from a server. You can turn them off in Android's settings, which the switch under Account › Settings › Notifications opens for you.
- Run at startup. Lets the app put your scheduled reminders back after the phone restarts. It does nothing else.
- Camera and photos. The app doesn't ask for these. "Take a photo" opens your phone's camera app, and "Choose from gallery" uses Android's photo picker. Either way, only the photo you choose is handed to the app.
What isn't collected
The app has no account, no analytics, no advertising ID, no ad networks and no crash reporting. It doesn't connect to any server, and it doesn't read your location, contacts or anything else on your phone. Because nothing is collected, nothing is shared or sold.
Backups and moving to a new phone
- Export backup makes a .zip with your rooms, pins, dates and photos (and Recently deleted, if you choose). The app hands it to whatever you pick in the share sheet, such as Files, Google Drive, email or a chat app. From there, that service's privacy policy applies. The .zip isn't encrypted, so keep it somewhere you trust.
- Import backup replaces everything in the app with the contents of the .zip you pick.
- Google's cloud backup is turned off for this app, so your data isn't copied to Google's servers automatically. If you move to a new phone with Android's phone-to-phone transfer (Android 12 and later), your data can be copied directly between the two phones.
Error reports
The error log stays on your phone. If you copy it from Account › About and send it to me, I'll receive the technical error messages it contains and the times they happened. I'll use them only to fix the problem, and delete them when they're no longer needed.
When you email me
If you write to feedback@unforgettablethings.app or bugs@unforgettablethings.app, I receive your email address, your name if your email app includes it, and whatever you write or attach. Emails are forwarded to my inbox by Cloudflare, which handles mail for this domain.
Emails to bugs@ are also saved as private issues in the app's code repository on GitHub, so I can track and fix each problem. Only I can see them. I use what you send only to answer you and improve the app, and you can ask me to delete your emails and any issues made from them at any time.
Deleting your data
You can delete any room, photo or pin in the app. Empty Recently deleted to remove things straight away rather than after the waiting period. Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored. Backups you exported stay wherever you saved them until you delete them there.
Children
The app is for a general audience. It doesn't collect personal information from anyone, children included.
This website
This site has no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts, and its fonts are served from the site itself. It's hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub logs visitors' IP addresses for security; see GitHub's notes on Pages and the GitHub General Privacy Statement.
Cloud sync
Cloud sync and household sharing aren't in the app. If they're added, this policy will be updated before they're released, explaining what would be stored, where, and for how long.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, the new version is posted on this page with a new effective date.
